Automobile Drawings

Included in Andrew F. Johnson’s Correspondence School For Automobile Body Makers, Designers and Draftsman were a series of drawings of automobile chassis from a variety of manufacturers, ready for custom bodies to be drawn as homework assignments. As far as I know, these are the only surviving drawings of cars by Johnson, considered the father of American automotive styling because of the many first generation stylists whom he taught. In the case of the drawing of the Packard above, in addition to one of the original black and white reproductions in the NAHC portfolio of the  (which we’re calling “originals” in this project to distinguish from “cyanotype” reproductions) there were also the original hand drawings, in Johnson’s own hand, pasted up for reproduction. The chassis drawings were not the only drawings of cars in the course, as some of the lesson papers also have examples of Johnson’s automotive art, which have been included in the Automobile Drawings category as well. On an organizational note, on this blog, Johnson’s car drawings have been used as dividers, posted in between the lesson papers’ different series.
