Ford Car Sales Double in China

FORD Motor Corp more than doubled sales in China last year, becoming the nation's fastest-growing passenger car maker, the company said yesterday. The United States' second-largest automobile maker sold 129,790 cars to Chinese customers last year, an increase of 112 percent from 2005, with high demand for its Focus compact cars and Mondeo sedans. Ford's sales growth strongly outpaced the average industry growth of 38.5 percent in the passenger car segment for the first 11 months of 2006. Over the whole year, Shanghai General Motors Corp captured the crown as the best-selling car maker for a second consecutive year. The Chinese venture for General Motors Corp, the world's biggest car maker, saw its total sales reach 413,367 cars last year, an increase of 23 percent year on year. Its four car brands include Cadillac, Buick, Chevrolet and Saab in China… Meanwhile, Chery Automobile Co Ltd climbed three places to become the nation's fourth-biggest car maker in terms of sales last year, the first time a Chinese company has broken into the top five.
